Contest Engages Youth Through “Do Nothing” Video

Programs, Volunteer Ahmedabad

The ‘Design for Giving’ Youth Contest sponsored by Volunteer Ahmedabad and Riverside School (a local private school) encourages youth to create and implement projects for community development. The contest reaches out to the young people of Ahmedabad gives them the platform to implement their own ideas for local projects. It will be the ideas of local youth, along with their sincerity and commitment to bring about change that will help build make Ahmedabad into the city of their dreams.

The contest is part of an initiative by Give India Foundation called the  Joy of Giving week which is held from 27th Sept to Oct 3rd all over India. The sole purpose of the Joy of Giving week is to inspire people from all walks of life to do something. The contest kicked off with a visit from brand ambassador Rahul Bose  (Actor) to Ahmedabad in late August. Participants will implement their idea for one week, between August 25 and October 3 and afterwards, participants will share their experiences. The best ideas will receive prizes and selected ideas will be given a grant of up to Rs 50,000 for long term implementation of the project.

To reach out to city youth for contest, VA veteran Bhardwaj  Jani spoofed a 2008 US Elections Youtube video encouraging viewers not to vote. The VA video (which will be up on the Indicorps Youtube channel as soon as it is ready) encourages viewers to “Do Nothing.”  Volunteers used the video as a means for creating dialogue and discussion, going around the city showing the video to youth with the hope of making people think about the idea of doing something in a small way. “It’s like dropping the seeds, regardless of whether they participate in the contest or not,” said VA Coordinator Vijay Ramchandani.
